Project GRAD Akron Announces New Board Members and Officers for 2024-2025

Akron, OH, (June 18, 2024) - Project GRAD Akron, a leading organization dedicated to empowering students to achieve academic success and pursue higher education, held its Annual Meeting on May 8, 2024. During the meeting, elections were made to the Board of Directors, shaping the organization's leadership for the coming years.

Project GRAD Akron is thrilled to announce the success of its 10th Annual March GRADness fundraiser, held on Tues., April 9, 2024.

This milestone event, hosted at Greystone Hall in downtown Akron, brought together community members, supporters, and sponsors for an evening of celebration and philanthropy.

March GRADness, affectionately dubbed as "the happiest hour" affair, exceeded expectations with its lineup of activities, networking opportunities, and food stations. Attendees were treated to an array of experiences including raffles, games with enticing prizes, and a selection of beverages, all while supporting a noble cause.

Project GRAD Akron (PGA) hosted its 17th Annual Breakfast and Educational Fun with Santa on Saturday, December 4 at Buchtel Community Learning Center and East Community Learning, both of the Akron Public Schools. The family-friendly event was free and open to the public. A special thank you is extended to the Akron Public Schools, CareSource, and Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation for their support. Additionally, the event was the Kick-off for Ideastream Public Media’s Ready to Learn Initiative.

$89 Million Awarded for Summer Learning and Afterschool Programs that Address Students’ Academic Needs and Well-Being 

Project GRAD Akron is thankful to have been one of the recipients of the grants, which were awarded to support partnerships between schools and community-based organizations that seek to provide out-of-school time services designed to address students’ academic, social and emotional needs.

Akron Public Schools to receive $1.18 million in grant money for 'GEAR UP' program, with Project GRAD Akron as the lead partner in the grant

The grant funds will be used to provide financial aid information for postsecondary education encouraging enrollment in rigorous and challenging coursework to reduce the need for remediation at the postsecondary level; implementing activities to improve the number of participating students who obtain a secondary school diploma and who complete applications for and enroll in a program of postsecondary education; and providing scholarships to students.


Board Member Judge Annalisa Williams selected as one of the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio's 2022 Women of Distinction Honorees

Board Member Judge Annalisa Williams will be will be recognized at the Women of Distinction event on Friday, May 6. The awards event serves to recognize female leaders who exemplify Girl Scout values of ethical leadership, professional accomplishments, and a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others while also raising funds for the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Board member Dr. Ellen McWilliams-Woods will be recognized as a 2022 Woman of the Year award recipient by The Women’s History Project of the Akron Area on June 15, 2022 at the John Brown House from 4 to 5:30 p.m.  Tickets are available on Eventbrite beginning at $25.00 per person.

Board Member Judge Annalisa Williams will be recognized with a 2022 Outstanding Law Alumni Award from the University of Akron on Friday, May 13, 2022 from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m.  The breakfast and awards program will be held at the Jean Hower Tabler Student Union Ballroom, 303 Carroll Street, Akron, OH  44325. Tickets are $45.00 per person.

Dr. Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval named as Vice Provost for Student Pathways and Dean of University of Akron Honors College.

Congratulations to Board Vice President Dr. Fedearia Nicholson-Sweval for her selection as Vice Provost for Student Pathways and Dean of University of Akron Honors College.  She will begin the position on April 29, 2022.

Project GRAD Akron to Host 8th Annual March GRADness

Project GRAD Akron (PGA) is hosting its 8th Annual March GRADness fundraiser on Monday, April 4, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Greystone Hall in Akron, OH. March GRADness is a basketball-themed, casual, “Happy Hour” event and proceeds will support PGA’s programs, services, and scholarship fund, which benefit students in the Akron Public Schools.


All children ages 1 through 18 are eligible to receive free meals during the summer months at participating program sites.

Individuals ages 19 through 21 who have been identified as having mental or physical disabilities and are following Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through their current enrollment in educational programs also are eligible for free summer meals.


Project Ujima’s African American Read-In (AARI) Committee presents the “Make Reading a Passport to Your Dreams” Program

The program seeks to serve 15 students in the 6th and 7th grades who will be attending Buchtel CLC in the Fall of 2021. They will read the book A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds and each student who completes this 6-week program will receive $100.

Project GRAD Akron’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Workshop Series

Please join Project GRAD Akron on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., for our fourth DEI professional development workshop session presented by Dr. Lisa Williams, a national consultant on topics of equity and access in public education. The event is free, virtual, and open to the public.  Registration is required.
